ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)— When Stephen Curry finds his groove from long distance, as demonstrated on Thursday night— a feat he has accomplished more frequently than any other player in the history of the NBA—his coach has complete confidence that the shot will land.

In the Golden State Warriors’ 121-115 win over the Orlando Magic, Curry netted 56 points and hit 12 shots from beyond the arc, including a remarkable shot from near midcourt that capped the first half.

“He’s had so many moments like that in recent years. The instant he released it, I thought, ‘That’s going in,’” remarked Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “I just sensed it, and I believe it set a positive tone for the second half.”

Curry returned to the court to outscore the Magic 22-21 in the third quarter of his 1,000th regular-season game.

“There were a lot of players who helped secure this victory,” Curry noted, “but having a burst like that is really enjoyable.”

This performance marked Curry’s 14th game scoring 50 or more points, allowing him to surpass Patrick Ewing and take the 26th spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring chart with 24,867 points. He shot 12-of-19 from 3-point territory, making 10 or more triples for a record 26th time in his career. His 56 points were just six shy of his personal best.

“It never gets tiring to witness it, that’s for sure,” Kerr stated. “I believe the fans tonight, even those supporting the Magic, realized they were watching the greatest shooter of all time and one of the finest performers ever. It’s not just about the shots going in; it’s the fluidity and grace of his technique, as well as his boldness in taking difficult shots.”

This includes the long-range shot just before halftime that provided the Warriors with much-needed momentum.

“In the first half, we were struggling, and he sort of kept us in the game,” said Draymond Green. “He continued that momentum in the third quarter and completely took control of the match.”

Curry fell just one short of his personal best for 3-pointers made and added to his record of stellar performances on February 27. He had previously scored 54 points with 11 triples against the Knicks in 2013 and 46 points against the Thunder in 2016, also with 12 3-pointers.

“When you have nights like tonight, they can come in various forms… because you’re in a rhythm, and the ball is coming to you at the perfect moments,” Curry explained. “But you must possess the proper footwork, balance, and confidence to shoot, regardless of the circumstances, and be ready for your opportunity.

“I practice all kinds of shots, and on certain nights, everything just clicks.”

After the game, he tossed his jersey to his mother in the crowd, a simple throw from just a few feet away.

However, this evening was all about Curry’s remarkable long-range shooting.

“I try most shots at some point, just to let my creativity flow,” Curry shared. “It’s a way to enjoy the game and also test my range—seeing the ball go in from all over the court.”
