Pau Gasol, a basketball legend from Europe and a Hall of Fame inductee, is emerging as a leading contender for the role of CEO of the NBA Europe league, according to exclusive information obtained by Eurohoops.
Although the NBA Europe initiative is still in the planning stages, Pau Gasol’s name is becoming increasingly prominent in conversations as the potential ideal candidate to helm this new league in an executive capacity.
“Pau Gasol boasts deep connections to both the NBA and European basketball, making him one of the most esteemed and beloved personalities in the sport globally,” an NBA insider shared with Eurohoops. “His achievements are well-recognized. He has proven himself as a leader, and the idea of him stepping into the CEO position for this new league is met with unanimous support among NBA owners.”
“He was a dominant force in the low post. Without his contributions, the Lakers wouldn’t have bagged any titles in 2009 and 2010,” the source continued.
Currently a member of the International Olympic Committee and the president of the Gasol Foundation, Pau Gasol has shown interest in taking on an executive role within the NBA following his retirement in 2021. Throughout his NBA career, he also held the position of Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).
Gasol led the Los Angeles Lakers to NBA championships in 2009 and 2010 and was selected as an NBA All-Star six times (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016).
On the international stage, his career has been marked by remarkable success, guiding Spain to victory at the 2006 World Championship and securing EuroBasket titles in 2009, 2011, and 2015, where he was named MVP for the tournaments in 2006, 2009, and 2015. He also earned silver medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and a bronze in 2016.
