Carmelo Anthony Envisions a Fan-Centric Future as He Eyes Ownership of the Washington Wizards

Having played 1,343 games in the NBA, Carmelo Anthony’s next venture might involve investing in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals.

The 40-year-old retired athlete shared his aspirations during a recent episode of his podcast, “7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony.”

“I’m interested in purchasing the Wizards. I believe I would make an excellent owner,” Anthony expressed, adding, “As a former player, I have insights into the needs of players and staff. I comprehend exhaustion and the intricacies of team-building. I also recognize the limits of my knowledge. It’s crucial to appoint capable individuals for roles like President and General Manager—those who bring basketball expertise—and to complement that with a solid business strategy.”

A ten-time All-Star, he played for various teams, including the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers between 2003 and 2022.

Anthony emphasized, “Many owners fail to invest the effort needed to enhance the fan experience. They tend to delegate and simply ask, ‘What should I do?’ This mentality persists. Instead, from the moment fans approach the arena, they should enjoy a complete experience. Furthermore, it’s essential to have the right staff in place on the business side to manage contracts and scouting. It’s important to have people who can accurately assess talent and engage with the community.”

“You have to reconnect with the community,” he continued. “Invite fans to the practice facility, let them witness open practices, and organize events like Wizards Day where fans can participate for free. Players will appreciate it. You need to bring the experience to the fans and truly give back.”

Melo has his sights set on joining the ownership group of the Wizards, equipped with a strategy for a bright future.

However, it’s worth noting that the process of actualizing bids for the NBA team is still in the preliminary stages.
