New Beginnings: Santi Aldama Embraces Fresh Ideas Under Interim Coach Tuomas Iisalo with Grizzlies

In his fourth year in the NBA, Santi Aldama has emerged as a dependable asset off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies, showcasing his best statistical performance to date.

In a recent interview with Hoopshype, he discussed various subjects, including the recent coaching transition with Taylor Jenkins and Tuomas Iisalo, who has been appointed as the interim head coach.

“I am incredibly grateful to Taylor [Jenkins] for everything he has contributed to my development. However, with Tuomas [Iisalo] stepping in, I feel like we’re getting a fresh perspective. He has some fantastic ideas. I’m somewhat familiar with what he implemented back in Europe, and it was impressive work,” Aldama said.

“I enjoy discussing basketball with someone who possesses a deep understanding of the game—just relishing the sport, I suppose. Ultimately, basketball is basketball,” he added.

Since the commencement of the 2024-25 season, he has averaged 12.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game for Memphis, despite only starting in 16 contests.

“This is how I prefer to play. I’m more accustomed to my style from back home, where I can truly express myself and connect with my teammates. It’s certainly been enjoyable, and I believe it will continue to improve as I gain more experience. It has been a significant step forward,” he remarked.

The Spanish forward also spoke about representing his national team, expressing aspirations for success at EuroBasket 2025. “Wearing your country’s colors is a feeling that is hard to compare to anything else. Playing basketball on behalf of your nation is something I haven’t quite been able to articulate yet,” he began.

“Taking on a more leadership-oriented role, despite my young age, is helping me become better and find ways to adapt what I learn here to there, while also contributing to victories. I am focused on winning, and anything that interferes with that is not my priority. I’m simply looking for ways to succeed.”
