Headline: EuroLeague Chief Raises Alarm Over NBAs Growing Influence in European Basketball

Jordi Bertomeu has held the position of CEO of the EuroLeague for an impressive 22 years, playing a key role in establishing what has become the premier league for basketball in Europe.

With a new endeavor on the horizon, as announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, one former EuroLeague figure is not pleased about the NBA’s venture into Europe with a new league.

In an interview with Il Corriere della Sera, he characterized the forthcoming NBA Europe as a potential feeder league for the NBA, reminiscent of the organization’s approach in Africa.

“The NBA has been present in Africa for several years, yet it remains largely unrecognized. The growth there has stalled, but Americans have a firm grip on the talents emerging from the continent. A similar trend could unfold in Europe,” Bertomeu asserted.

He added, “The fact that recent NBA MVPs are Europeans indicates their vested interest in our basketball scene. Their aim is to dominate it,” Bertomeu candidly remarked.

Bertomeu also addressed the recent challenges faced by the EuroLeague. “It’s accurate that in the last three years, we’ve seen two different CEOs leading the EuroLeague after having just one for 22 years. There’s a general uncertainty about the EuroLeague’s direction, and it is clear to everyone that internal issues exist.”

“The NBA has sensed an opportunity amid the EuroLeague’s vulnerabilities and disorganization. Their entry into this space, which would have seemed improbable five years ago, is a direct result,” he concluded.
