Pau Gasol acknowledges that the new wave of European players in the NBA has elevated the standard of the game, but he refrains from claiming they have eclipsed the achievements of his generation.
“In a way, it’s true that the younger players have enhanced the overall level of play. However, asserting that they have overtaken an older generation is a more complicated assertion for me,” Gasol remarked when discussing the emergence of talents like Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“When I reflect on players who came before me, I don’t see myself as having surpassed anyone. Instead, I view it as building upon their legacy,” he clarified. “What today’s exceptional European athletes are accomplishing in the NBA is truly advancing our contributions, further elevating the caliber of play we strived to achieve.”
A two-time champion and six-time NBA All-Star, Gasol expressed his pride in witnessing the flourishing of European talent.
“I feel immense pride and enthusiasm about this progression. It’s a wonderful indicator of growth and a source of pride for us. We aspire to see even more of it.”
