Doncic Set to Secure Future with Lakers: Anticipated Three-Year Extension in the Works

Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka Doncic has expressed a strong desire to remain with the team.

Bobby Marks of ESPN provided insights into various players who might receive offseason contract extensions across the NBA, including Doncic from Ljubljana, affirming the expectations around his intention to secure his future with the legendary franchise.

At 26 years old, Doncic is anticipated to agree to a three-year extension valued at $165 million, which would feature a player option for the 2028-29 season, based on the most recent information.

However, discussions for the deal cannot commence until August 2, which marks six months since his trade to Los Angeles. The player could potentially qualify for a more lucrative four-year extension worth $229 million, where the first-year salary would replace the existing player option for the 2026-27 season, rather than a three-year, $160 million extension.

Looking ahead, the retention of a five-time All-Star like Doncic would indicate the Lakers’ intent to continue vying for championship titles, particularly after the anticipated retirement of 40-year-old LeBron James.

Since his trade from the Dallas Mavericks, the Slovenian star has played in 33 games for the Lakers, averaging 28.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game during both the regular season and playoffs.

Before joining the NBA as the third overall pick in the 2018 draft, Doncic achieved remarkable success, winning the championship, Final Four MVP, and season MVP in the 2017-18 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

His early career also included earning a gold medal with Slovenia at EuroBasket 2017. Furthermore, Doncic is expected to continue representing his national team and compete in EuroBasket 2025.
