Adam Silver Champions NBA Expansion: Aiming to Bring High-Level Basketball to Europe

Before the NBA Finals kicked off with the Indiana Pacers defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1, thanks to Tyrese Haliburton’s game-winning shot, Adam Silver held his annual press conference.

During this event, he addressed a range of topics, including the exciting prospect of launching a new league in Europe, as previously discussed in a joint statement with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

Silver stated, “We have been exploring the idea of establishing a league in Europe. I see this as a means of expansion. Just like in American cities, we believe there are fans in Europe who we can better engage. I have no intention of undermining European basketball, as many of the international MVPs I’ve referenced come from that region. The quality of basketball played there is exceptional. However, we see potential to enhance the experience for fans in Europe. I view this as a form of expansion that we are seriously considering.”

He highlighted the potential for growth outside the U.S. right after discussing the possibilities within the country, temporarily setting aside any such international expansions.

“We acknowledge that there are markets in the United States, and elsewhere, that are underserved and would benefit from having NBA teams. Even with expansion, it’s likely that we wouldn’t be able to cover all the deserving markets,” Silver commented.
