NBA Europe: A Vision for the Future, But Launch Still Years Away, Says Adam Silver

Following a joint press conference with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, there has been a notable lull in public discourse regarding NBA Europe for several months.

However, in recent days, Silver has re-engaged on the topic, discussing the initiative aimed at expanding basketball’s presence in Europe. He first addressed NBA Europe during the annual press briefing prior to the NBA Finals and revisited the subject following an NBA Cares event in Oklahoma City.

“We’re just at the beginning of this journey, making it challenging to establish a precise timeline. We’re probably still a few years away from a launch, as this is a significant endeavor,” Silver remarked, hinting that the 2028 Olympics could serve as a potential launchpad.

“As we aim to proceed carefully, it’s also crucial that we engage with all relevant stakeholders. This includes conversations with the EuroLeague, its franchises, European athletes, media outlets, and marketing partners. There remains a considerable amount of work ahead,” he added.

“Regardless, we firmly believe there is a vast audience of basketball enthusiasts in Europe who are currently underserved, presenting a significant opportunity to create another league akin to the NBA,” Silver stated.

According to the NBA’s commentary on the subject, cities such as London, Manchester, Rome, and Munich are anticipated to be key players in this new endeavor.

Silver also addressed the idea of establishing entirely new teams, noting, “We haven’t had detailed discussions yet, but several organizations have expressed interest in being potential owners and operating in those major European markets.”
