Though Patty Mills’ journey in the NBA is far from over—having previously played for the Los Angeles Clippers—the veteran guard is embarking on a new chapter in his basketball career, stepping into off-court responsibilities as well.
The 36-year-old will take on the role of General Manager for the University of Hawaii’s basketball program. “It’s a profound honor for me to join the University of Hawai’i as its new General Manager. This position represents not just a professional achievement, but a deeply personal one,” he expressed.
“As someone from the Torres Strait Islands, I feel a significant cultural bond with Hawai’i, despite our different geographical backgrounds. Our communities share a strong reverence and spiritual connection to the land, sea, and sky, along with a commitment to family and traditions.”
“My ties to UH date back to 2007, and since integrating into the North Shore community, I’ve experienced a true sense of belonging reminiscent of home. I’m incredibly thankful for the warm welcome I’ve received from this community.”
“I’m dedicated to honoring that bond by contributing to our program and embodying the principles we cherish. I’m excited to collaborate with this amazing staff to give back to the game, nurture its growth, and help cultivate something exceptional for Hawai’i basketball,” Mills affirmed.
The announcement came through a press release from head coach Eran Ganot: “This is a significant day for our program. The landscape of college athletics has shifted dramatically and continues to lean towards a model akin to professional sports,” he noted.
“Our objective is to navigate these changing times boldly while remaining true to our program’s and Hawai’i’s core values. Having engaged with the island culture for the past decade, Patty [Mills] embodies those principles, and his affection for the islands is unmistakable. With his extensive NBA and international achievements, both on and off the court, he will be instrumental in elevating our program to its maximum potential. Few can exemplify what it means to be a compassionate professional like Patty [Mills],” Ganot added.
“We’re thrilled and feel fortunate to have him step into this leadership position with us. His influence will resonate not just within our program but throughout our remarkable University and island community.”
Patty Mills follows in the footsteps of Steph Curry, who was recently announced as the future Assistant General Manager at Davidson University, where he was raised. Interestingly, while Mills did not attend college at Hawaii, he played for the Saint Mary’s Gaels.
