Russell Westbrook Declines Player Option, Set to Test Free Agency After Strong Season with Nuggets

Russell Westbrook, the Denver Nuggets star, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after opting out of his contract for the 2025-26 season, as reported by Marc Stein.

At 36 years old, Westbrook holds a player option worth $3.4 million from his agreement with the Nuggets in 2024. The nine-time All-Star could either re-sign with Denver on a new contract or explore opportunities with another franchise once NBA free agency opens on June 30.

During the 2024-25 season, the former MVP posted averages of 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds over 76 regular-season games with the Nuggets. In the playoffs, he recorded 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists before Denver was knocked out in the second round by the Oklahoma City Thunder with a 3-4 series defeat.

Additionally, it was reported last month that Westbrook underwent surgery on his right hand to repair torn ligaments, according to the Nuggets.
