Desmond Bane Joins Orlando Magic in Major Trade, Shaking Up NBA Landscape

After spending five seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, Desmond Bane is set to be traded to the Orlando Magic, as reported by ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania on Sunday.

In exchange, the Grizzlies will acquire Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, along with the 16th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft presented by State Farm, the Phoenix Suns’ first-round selection in 2026, as well as first-round picks from the Magic in 2028 and 2030, plus a 2029 first-round pick swap, according to Charania. All of these picks are unprotected.

Bane, who is 26, was originally drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 30th overall pick before being traded to the Grizzlies in 2020 after his college career at Texas Christian. Over the past five years, he has played in 340 games, including 27 during four playoff runs. As he joins Orlando, he is expected to complement German Franz Wagner and fellow star Paolo Banchero with his strong outside shooting and off-ball movement.

Caldwell-Pope, now 32, has already experienced two trades in his career and was part of championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and the Denver Nuggets in 2023. The former standout from Georgia has compiled 979 appearances in the NBA, after being selected by the Detroit Pistons with the eighth overall pick in 2013.

Anthony, 25, is a product of North Carolina’s NCAA program and has spent five consecutive seasons with Orlando, totaling 332 appearances. Known for his offensive prowess, he was selected 15th overall in the 2020 draft and is recognized as an explosive point guard.
