Basketball can be unforgiving, leaving young talents like Tyrese Haliburton feeling let down.
Following a practice session on Sunday, the 25-year-old point guard for the Indiana Pacers reflected on how, in his youth, he wasn’t particularly fond of Rick Carlisle, his current head coach. This was due to Carlisle’s success in leading the Dallas Mavericks to victory over the Miami Heat and his favorite player, LeBron James, during the 2011 NBA Finals.
“I recall that being my first real introduction to basketball. My earliest memory of the sport dates back to the 2010 NBA season. I feel like it marked a significant point in my development as a basketball enthusiast, where I began to truly appreciate the game,” he said during a press conference, reminiscing about his experiences as an 11-year-old fan.
“I can’t say I remember too many of the tactical aspects. I just remember feeling puzzled about why Dallas was winning. I didn’t quite grasp it then,” he continued, “I often think about how much I’ve observed and absorbed on my journey to the NBA and now, here I am, working alongside Coach Carlisle. It’s a pretty amusing reflection.”
In 2011, German basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki earned the title of Finals MVP while leading the Mavericks to their first and only championship.
Now, in a comparable underdog situation with the Pacers and tied 2-2 after four games against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 2025 NBA Finals presented by YouTube TV will continue on Monday at Paycom Center.
