Doc Rivers Defends Giannis: How Many Times Does He Need to Say He Wants to Stay a Buck?

Most of the offseason chatter has revolved around trade speculation involving Giannis Antetokounmpo, prompting Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers to contemplate how the star player can affirm his commitment to leading the franchise.

“It’s utterly absurd. You hear all these rumors, and while you know they’re not factual, it’s hard to ignore them,” the 63-year-old coach expressed during his appearance on The Bill Simmons Show on Tuesday. “However, it’s important to remember that both your players and the public are listening.”

Antetokounmpo, 30, has recently reaffirmed his desire to compete for the NBA Finals with the Bucks, effectively dismissing earlier speculation about his future in the league and potential pursuits of alternative avenues to enhance his chances for a second championship.

“I can’t comprehend how many more times Giannis needs to proclaim his wish to be a Buck and his aspiration to secure a title with the team. It’s refreshing to see, especially since that’s not the norm anymore. I can’t imagine Steph Curry ever leaving Golden State, and I’m hopeful Giannis shares that sentiment. His dedication has been evident, and it’s been fantastic,” Rivers added.

The Athens native has returned to Greece, where he has begun individual training in preparation for representing the senior national team coached by Vassilis Spanoulis in EuroBasket 2025. Following that, he will transition back to Rivers’ team for the 2025-26 NBA season.
