Headline: Thunder Coach Mark Daigneault Sees Potential Star in Young Point Guard Nikola Topic: An Old Soul Beyond His Years

Nikola Topic is anticipated to join the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2025-26 season. Since the start of the 2024-25 season, the 19-year-old point guard from Serbia has been undergoing rehabilitation after having surgery on a torn ACL in his left knee.

Recently, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault, echoing comments about Topic from Luguentz Dort, expressed admiration for the young player. He remarked, “In terms of what he’s doing right now, he’s still at a post-operative stage. He’s still in the process of returning to performance. I don’t think he’s the player he will be come training camp.”

Daigneault further noted, “What stands out the most is that he’s extraordinarily young, experiencing life in the United States and the NBA for the first time, and he’s coming off a significant injury. Despite this, he has shown remarkable consistency, maturity, and professionalism in his conduct. Observing someone navigate this journey can reveal a lot about their character.”

Heading into the offseason after the 2025 NBA Playoffs, the Thunder will evaluate whether Topic can participate in the upcoming Summer League, with an eye toward his potential availability for the 2025-26 regular season.

“He has seamlessly integrated himself into the team in a commendable manner,” Daigneault remarked. “The players truly respect his approach to the game. He possesses an old soul and displays wisdom beyond his years, which is promising for his future, no matter where he begins his career on the court. Such qualities have a way of translating positively, and he has made a strong impression.”

With the Thunder leading the Indiana Pacers 3-2, Game 6 of the Finals is set to happen at Gainbridge Fieldhouse this Friday. Should it be necessary, Game 7 is scheduled for Paycom Center on Sunday.
