The Phoenix Suns are anticipated to waive their team option on Vasilije Micic’s contract.
After the recent trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, the team’s complex salary-cap scenario may necessitate parting ways with the 31-year-old Serbian point guard, as reported by Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports on Sunday.
As part of the significant trade, the Suns are expected to gain Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the tenth pick in the 2025 NBA Draft presented by State Farm, and five additional second-round picks. To accommodate these new contracts, the franchise may have to forgo an 8.1 million dollar team option, making Micic an unrestricted free agent.
The clarity of this situation is likely to improve as the Suns finalize their roster for the 2025-26 season following the upcoming draft, which is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The deadline to decline the option is set for Sunday.
Multiple clubs from the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, including the reigning champions Fenerbahce Beko, are closely watching the situation, eager to explore the possibility of signing Micic for the next season of Europe’s elite club competition.
Since joining the Suns in February, the two-time EuroLeague champion with Anadolu Efes—who was named Most Valuable Player of the Final Four in both 2021 and 2022, and earned the MVP title for the 2020-21 season—has participated in only five games, averaging 0.4 rebounds and 0.2 assists per contest. Previously, during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, he played in 96 NBA games with the Charlotte Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder.
