Toronto Raptors Bid Farewell to Masai Ujiri, Architect of 2019 Championship, as New Era Begins

Masai Ujiri, president and vice chairman of the Toronto Raptors, was dismissed on Friday after an impressive tenure of 13 years with the team.

Ujiri initially joined the Raptors in 2013, taking on the role of executive vice president and general manager. He was elevated to president in 2016, relinquishing his general managerial duties in 2017 when Bobby Webster was appointed to that position.

At 54 years old and entering the final year of his contract, Ujiri was instrumental in leading the Raptors to their historic NBA championship in 2019.

“Throughout his 13 years with the Raptors, Masai has played a pivotal role in transforming the organization both on the court and as an inspiring leader off it,” stated Keith Pelley, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. “He brought an NBA title to Toronto and instilled a belief in this city and our potential. We are thankful for all his contributions and wish him and his family all the best.”

On the day following the conclusion of the NBA draft, the Raptors announced Ujiri’s departure and indicated that the search for his successor would commence without delay.

Additionally, the Raptors confirmed that Webster has received a contract extension, though details of the agreement were not made public.

The previous season saw the Raptors finish with a record of 30-52, resulting in their absence from the playoffs.

“We are confident that the Raptors organization, under Bobby and his team’s leadership, is well-positioned for the future,” Pelly remarked. “They have a strategy for the upcoming season and beyond as the team continues its rebuilding phase, and we believe in their capability to implement it successfully and achieve excellence.”
