PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Yang Hansen appears poised to integrate seamlessly into American culture.
The 7-foot-1 center from China, recently introduced to Portland as a member of the Trail Blazers, shared his hobbies during a press conference. Interestingly, he revealed that he’s already an avid gamer.
“I enjoy sleeping—it’s one of my favorite things. I also love playing PS5 and eating,” Yang said with a laugh.
Yang was selected 16th overall in Wednesday’s NBA Draft. While some were caught off guard by his early selection, the Trail Blazers had been monitoring his progress for two years.
Last season, he averaged 16.6 points and 10.5 rebounds while playing for the Qingdao Eagles, having competed in China’s premier professional league for the last two years.
“He clearly has been coached well. There are many skills I usually need to teach younger players, but this kid already possesses them,” remarked Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. “I’m really excited about him; working with him will be a lot of fun.”
Originally holding the 11th pick in the Draft, Portland opted to trade their rights to guard Cedric Coward to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Yang’s draft rights along with a 2028 first-round pick, a 2027 second-round pick, and another second-round pick in 2028.
General manager Joe Cronin noted the significance of the trade and didn’t want to risk slipping further down the draft order, fearing Yang might no longer be available.
“In our view, he’s an incredibly unique talent. He stands at 7-2, is just about to turn 20, and possesses an elite skill set. His passing, basketball IQ, and post play stand out. We believe he’ll be effective at the free-throw line and can hit perimeter shots as well,” Cronin explained. “Defensively, he demonstrates remarkable intelligence and can be versatile in the post due to his size and understanding of the game.”
Yang, who was seated in the audience at the Draft and had to navigate his way to the stage when his name was announced, expressed that being compared to icons like Nikola Jokic and compatriot Yao Ming is a significant compliment.
“Being called the Baby Joker or associated with Yao is a huge honor,” Yang stated through an interpreter. “I aim to learn from every great player and strive to enhance my skills daily.”
