MIAMI (AP) — On Sunday, Duncan Robinson made the choice to enter unrestricted free agency by opting out of the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat.
According to sources cited by ESPN, the Miami Heat guard has decided against exercising his $20 million early termination option in favor of working with the franchise on a new agreement to either return or potentially join another team.
This move does not eliminate the possibility of Robinson remaining with the Heat. As the team’s all-time leader in 3-pointers, Robinson could have allowed his option to lapse, which would have ensured him $9.9 million from what is effectively a nearly $20 million deal for the upcoming season.
He now has the opportunity to negotiate a fresh contract with the Heat, participate in a sign-and-trade deal involving another player, or simply join a different franchise altogether. The NBA’s free agency officially commences Monday evening, and Robinson needed to make a decision regarding his termination option by Sunday.
At 31, Robinson’s journey in the NBA is remarkable. He began his college career at Division III Williams College, made his way to the University of Michigan, went undrafted, and ultimately seized the opportunity with the Heat.
With 1,202 3-pointers, he holds the record for the most made in franchise history and achieved quicker milestones in this category than any other player in NBA history—reaching 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1,000 3-pointers in fewer games than anyone else.
Throughout his seven seasons in the NBA, Robinson has averaged 11.3 points per game and boasts an impressive 39.7% shooting accuracy from beyond the arc.
