MIAMI (AP) — Davion Mitchell is set to return to the Miami Heat with a two-year deal valued at $24 million, according to a source familiar with the discussions who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday under the condition of anonymity, as the contract has yet to be finalized and made public.
Mitchell is viewed by the Heat as one of the premier on-ball defenders in the league. He joined Miami in February as part of the trade that sent Jimmy Butler to Golden State. During his time with the Heat, he played in 30 regular-season games, starting 15 and averaging 10.7 points per game.
In the postseason, he averaged 15 points across four playoff matches and expressed his eagerness to return to the team, despite the fact that he faced the prospect of becoming a restricted free agent this summer.
“Being here, I kind of just fit right in,” Mitchell remarked at the conclusion of the Heat’s season. “They needed someone who could provide a defensive presence, facilitate for teammates, and make their lives easier, and that’s what I believed I was able to accomplish.”
With this move, the Heat become Mitchell’s third franchise, following his time with Sacramento and Toronto. Selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Kings, he has accumulated averages of 7.6 points and 3.3 assists over the course of 301 regular-season games spanning four seasons.
