Chris Paul to Bid Farewell to NBA After Next Season, Reflects on Family and Legacy

With a remarkable 1,503 games played over 20 seasons in the NBA, Chris Paul anticipates wrapping up his career after one more year in the league.

“I’m thinking at most, just one year left,” he shared during a conversation on Jemele Hill’s Spolitics podcast. “Having just completed my 20th season is truly a gift. I’ve spent more than half my life in the NBA—a blessing indeed. But these years are time away from my children and family, and you can’t get that back.”

At 40 years old, the seasoned point guard is weighing his choices as an unrestricted free agent, hoping to spend his final season nearer to his loved ones in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, the Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly eyeing him as a potential acquisition, along with the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks.

Selected fourth overall in the 2005 draft after his time at Wake Forest, Paul’s extensive career includes six seasons with the Clippers, another six with the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, three with the Phoenix Suns, two with the Houston Rockets, and single-year stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, and most recently, the San Antonio Spurs. During the 2024-25 regular season, he started all 82 games, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 0.3 blocks per contest.

A four-time All-NBA First Team selection, along with five second-team and two third-team honors and 12 All-Star appearances, Paul’s impressive career is notable for its lack of an NBA championship. However, he did win gold medals with Team USA at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
