Simone Fontecchio is gearing up for a summer filled with activity and significance. The 29-year-old Italian forward has joined the Miami Heat through a recent trade and is also set to play for the Italian national team in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament, as reported by the Miami Herald.
“I’m currently in Italy, so I was asleep when the news broke,” Fontecchio shared during a call with reporters in South Florida. “It was quite late over here… But I’m really pleased. I’m satisfied with how everything unfolded, and I’m genuinely excited about the future.”
Fontecchio made his NBA debut in 2022 with the Utah Jazz after nearly ten years in European basketball. Although he wasn’t selected in the draft in 2017, his consistent progress eventually secured him a spot in the league.
“Especially last season was a bit of a rollercoaster for me,” he admitted. “I was recovering from significant surgery on my left foot last summer. It felt like I was constantly trying to reach my peak condition throughout the summer and into the regular season. I don’t think I ever managed to be at my best.”
Now, with a completely healthy offseason for the first time in several years, Fontecchio aims to take full advantage of the opportunity.
“This is the first summer in a while without injuries or issues, which allows me to truly concentrate on myself—my health and my skills. I have always believed I belong in this league, and I’m confident I can make a significant impact. I’m excited to return to that level of performance.”
Later this summer, Fontecchio is expected to compete for Italy in EuroBasket. Recognized for his versatility and defensive tenacity, he reminisced about the significant roles he took on with the Jazz.
“In my second year with the Jazz, I was guarding the opposing team’s top player nearly every game,” he recounted. “I take great pride in that—taking on those challenges and performing to the best of my abilities. My skill set aligns well with that, and I plan to focus even more on it,” Fontecchio concluded.
