Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been announced as the cover athlete for NBA 2K26, following his remarkable MVP and championship-winning performance last season, the game’s developer revealed on Tuesday.
The leading scorer of the previous season and Finals MVP will be featured on the standard edition of the game. He posted impressive averages of 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and five rebounds per game, guiding the Thunder to a stunning 68-14 record.
The Thunder had an extraordinary scoring margin, outpacing rivals by 12.9 points per game—the largest differential recorded in league history. They clinched the NBA title by defeating the Indiana Pacers in a seven-game series. Recently, Gilgeous-Alexander received recognition for his outstanding season with a record-breaking four-year extension valued at $285 million.
As of now, the release date for NBA 2K26 remains unannounced, but the game is anticipated to be available in September.
Last year’s cover athlete for NBA 2K was Jayson Tatum, a forward for the Boston Celtics, who also graced the cover after his team’s championship victory.
This announcement follows 2K Games hinting at a return to the college basketball gaming scene. It remains uncertain if they aim to revive their previously dormant college basketball franchise or to integrate collegiate basketball into their NBA series.
“2K is the definitive leader in basketball gaming,” said 2K Games in a statement to The Associated Press last week. “We have a rich legacy in college basketball and are exploring innovative ways to bring athletes and schools to life. Class is officially in session.”
