Jalen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder has reached an agreement for a five-year rookie max extension valued at up to $287 million, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 24-year-old forward had a remarkable season, being honored with All-NBA and All-Defensive team selections while averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.
Although he faced a torn wrist ligament late in the season, Williams persevered through the injury and played a pivotal role in securing OKC’s first NBA championship, highlighted by an impressive 40-point game in Game 5 of the Finals.
This contract solidifies Oklahoma City’s investment, totaling $822 million in their emerging Big 3 — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ($285M), Chet Holmgren ($250M), and Williams — indicating a commitment to remaining championship contenders throughout the next decade.
Despite making significant financial commitments, the Thunder are currently under the luxury tax and have retained flexibility for the future, thanks to a combination of team-friendly contracts and an abundant reserve of draft picks.
