LAS VEGAS – The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced today that Fred VanVleet has been elected as its new President during the annual summer gathering of the Board of Player Representatives. VanVleet’s four-year term is set to commence immediately.
“I am genuinely honored to have been chosen as the NBPA President by my fellow players, and I am eager to advocate for the best interests of all our members,” VanVleet remarked. “Understanding the intricate challenges and hurdles that players encounter in their NBA journeys, I pledge to undertake this role with the fervor, respect, and unwavering commitment that each player deserves.”

VanVleet, a seasoned nine-year NBA player and current guard for the Houston Rockets, began his professional journey as an undrafted player in 2016. He progressed through the G League, ultimately becoming a pivotal player for the 2019 NBA Championship-winning Toronto Raptors and earning his status as an NBA All-Star in 2022. Off the court, he is dedicated to philanthropic efforts and advocacy, having established The VanVleet Family Foundation (VFF) to enhance youth access to educational opportunities, athletic programs, and career development. As a father of three, VanVleet exemplifies leadership and commitment both in his professional life and personal responsibilities.
He will step into his new role with the support of CJ McCollum, who has been part of the Executive Committee for seven years—four of which he served as President (2021-2025) and three as Vice President (2018-2021). McCollum contributed to the NBPA’s leadership during the successful NBA Restart in 2020, playing a crucial role in various negotiations, including those for the 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement that expanded player benefits and introduced new equity investment opportunities.
“It has been an honor to serve on the NBPA Executive Committee for these past seven years and to influence the business of our game,” said CJ McCollum. “I am excited about the future of our Association under Fred’s leadership. He has earned the respect of the basketball community and has demonstrated his readiness for this significant responsibility. I look forward to supporting him as we strive to create a stronger Association that benefits both current and future generations of players.”
