Doncic Prioritizes EuroBasket Over NBA Contract Decisions, Set to Delay Talks

Luka Doncic is navigating a challenging offseason, particularly regarding a potential contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Ljubljana native will become eligible to sign a new contract on August 2, but he is anticipated to postpone his decision until after EuroBasket 2025, as suggested by Brian Windhorst on ESPN. His current contract, which runs through the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, includes nearly $46 million guaranteed and a player option for approximately $49 million in the 2026-27 season.

At 26 years old, Doncic has the opportunity to secure a four-year extension valued at $229 million or opt for a more flexible path with a three-year deal worth $165 million. Unlike his previous contract with the Dallas Mavericks, his mid-season blockbuster trade during the 2024-25 NBA Regular Season disqualifies him from signing a supermax extension.

While significant choices regarding his NBA career loom, Doncic is currently focused on representing Slovenia in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament. True to projections, he has been named to the preliminary roster for the national team, which is led by coach Aleksander Sekulic, with Donnie Nelson and Greg St. Jean also part of the coaching staff.

During the group stage, Slovenia will face off against Poland, France, Belgium, Iceland, and Israel in Katowice from August 28 to September 4. Like the other three groups, the top four teams from Group D will move on to the knockout rounds, scheduled to be held in Riga from September 6 to 14.
