NBA Eyes Global Growth: European Expansion Discussed at Board of Governors Meeting

Topics highlighted during the recent NBA Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas encompassed NBA Europe.

During a subsequent media conference on Tuesday, Commissioner Adam Silver shared various updates on emerging initiatives, emphasizing the distinct yet interconnected avenues of expansion both domestically and internationally.

“Although it’s not directly associated, we are discussing a different form of expansion, specifically the opportunities in Europe,” he remarked regarding the absence of direct ties between NBA Europe and any potential expansion in North America.

“Our vision for Europe involves an independent league, and while this endeavor stands apart, it is still linked to our broader aim of establishing new basketball franchises,” Silver elaborated.

“We’re not in a position where we’re saying that if we pursue something in Europe, it precludes us from acting in the United States or North America. The matters are indeed related,” he continued, “We aim to find ways to expand the game on a global scale and leverage the NBA brand to facilitate that growth.”

The discussions and subsequent media inquiries predominantly revolved around domestic expansion, particularly the potential return to Seattle and the creation of a new franchise in Las Vegas. Similar to the initial stages of NBA Europe’s exploration, there is currently no definitive timeline for introducing new teams to the league for the first time since 2004.

The upcoming Board of Governors meeting is anticipated to take place in September.
