Jonas Valanciunas expressed his dedication to fulfilling his contract with the Denver Nuggets and aiding the team’s quest for the championship title.
“I want to clarify my playing situation for the upcoming season now that Denver has decided to retain me,” Valanciunas told Basketnews. “The prospect of playing for Panathinaikos, so close to home, was incredibly appealing; however, that will have to be put on hold. I am wholeheartedly devoted to honoring my contract with the Nuggets this season and will strive to compete for a championship.”
Despite currently being under an NBA contract, Valanciunas reportedly reached a verbal agreement for a multiyear deal with the EuroLeague giant Panathinaikos Athens earlier this summer and even traveled to Greece for a medical examination with the club. This potential agreement was one reason his transfer from the Sacramento Kings to the Nuggets was delayed by a week before becoming official.
Valanciunas had not previously provided clear answers regarding whether he would play for the Nuggets next season or join Panathinaikos. However, Denver was confident there was no uncertainty about the Lithuanian veteran center joining their roster for the upcoming season.
The Nuggets acquired Valanciunas from the Kings, where he participated in 32 games last season. His contract features a non-guaranteed team option for the 2026-27 season.
