Thanasis Antetokounmpos Resilient Return Seals Bucks Contract as He Shines in Eurobasket Opener Against Italy

Limassol, Cyprus – John Horst, the general manager of the Bucks, alongside head coach Doc Rivers and his top assistant Darvin Ham, were seated courtside for Greece’s opening Eurobasket matchup against Italy.

While many speculated their presence was purely for supporting Giannis, there was another reason for their attendance.

The game served as a pivotal assessment regarding the prospective signing of Thanasis Antetokounmpo, who was playing his first official match after more than a year. As expected, Thanasis put in the effort, showcased his skills with impressive dunks, and demonstrated that he was back in form.

When asked if the game influenced their decision to sign him, Thanasis acknowledged its significance: “Absolutely. They were here during the game against Italy, and they were thrilled to see me playing defense. I was fulfilling my role. It’s crucial for anyone returning from an injury, especially in a team setting or a tournament like this, to reestablish their credibility. That’s just how basketball works. Your previous accomplishments serve as your resume, but you must validate yourself daily. That’s the nature of professional sports.”

Giannis’ elder brother sustained an injury in May 2024, and since then, he has been focused on his comeback, which many presumed would take place in Europe. Ultimately, the Bucks brought him back, and he expressed his gratitude: “I want to extend my thanks to everyone who supported me alongside my family. The most significant challenge was regaining my physical fitness. That was the priority, and everything else will follow. This opportunity means a great deal to me, and I’m truly thankful to God for allowing me to be here.”

Securing a contract for the next season will enable the 33-year-old Thanasis to devote his attention more fully to the task ahead—preparing for the next game of the currently undefeated Greek national team in the Eurobasket: “My focus right now is on the upcoming game against Bosnia, but having secured a team is a blessing from God for all the effort I’ve put in to return. It’s a tough journey, but I remain enthusiastic about working hard.”
