On Wednesday, Myles Hesson dropped 25 points, guiding Britain to its first win in 12 years at the EuroBasket tournament, achieving an 89-83 surprise victory over Montenegro that dashed their opponents’ chances of making it to the knockout stage.

Having suffered four consecutive defeats in Group B, Britain delivered a commendable team performance to snap its losing streak and astonish Montenegro, who required a win to advance to the round of 16.

Additionally, Hesson recorded seven rebounds, while Akwasi Yeboah contributed 23 points for the British side.

Montenegro’s Nikola Vučević, center for the Chicago Bulls, led his team with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, but was unable to offset the impact of Montenegro’s 18 turnovers.

“They played with more intensity and did what was necessary throughout the match to secure the win,” Vučević remarked.

Both Montenegro and Britain are now out of the tournament, a result that benefited Sweden, which progressed to the knockout stage for the first time ever, even after losing to Lithuania 74-71. Additionally, Germany, Lithuania, and Finland also qualified for the round of 16 from Group B.

The knockout rounds are set to commence in Riga, Latvia, starting Saturday.

In Group A, Portugal secured a vital 68-65 victory over Estonia to qualify, despite the ejection of Boston Celtics center Neemias Queta in the third quarter.

Heading into the final minute, Estonia held a 64-61 advantage, but Rafael Lisboa evened the score with a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining. Lisboa subsequently sank four free throws, finishing with 17 points and five assists.

Portugal will take on Germany on Saturday for a chance to reach the quarterfinals.

Queta was disqualified with 4:34 left in the third quarter while Portugal was ahead by a single point, having received two technical fouls, and he finished the game with 15 points.

In another match from the same group, Latvia delighted the home crowd, including President Edgars Rinkēvičs, with a resounding 109-75 win against the Czech Republic.

Brothers Davis and Dairis Bertans each scored 20 points for Latvia. Kristaps Porziņģis, center for the Atlanta Hawks, added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Finishing third in their group, Latvia will meet Lithuania in the round of 16.

Turkey clinched the top position in Group A with a 95-90 triumph over Serbia, sinking six free throws in the final minute.

Attention was on Alperen Sengun and Nikola Jokić as the two undefeated teams battled for first place. Sengun, the Houston Rockets center, topped Turkey’s scoring with 28 points, alongside 13 rebounds and 8 assists.

Turkey secured their win by converting a series of free throws. Sengun hit two foul shots with 41 seconds left, bringing Turkey ahead 91-90. Shane Larkin drew a foul with 15 seconds remaining and sank both attempts, then Sengun hit two more free throws with 10 seconds to go, extending the lead to 95-90.

Jokić led Serbia, contributing 22 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.

Both teams will continue their campaigns on Saturday: Turkey faces Sweden, while Serbia goes up against Finland.
