Bilal Coulibaly Faces Indefinite Recovery After Thumb Surgery from EuroBasket Injury

Bilal Coulibaly underwent surgery on his right thumb to address a ligament tear, as announced by the Washington Wizards on Friday.

The 21-year-old shooting guard sustained the injury during his international duties with France at EuroBasket 2025.

Following his operation in New York City, he has been placed on an indefinite injury list and is anticipated to be out for part of the upcoming 2025-26 NBA Regular Season, as reported by senior NBA insider Shams Charania from ESPN.

During his participation in the EuroBasket tournament, Coulibaly averaged 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 0.7 blocks, 0.5 steals, and 0.5 assists across six games before his team was eliminated in the Round of 16. France, after a successful 4-1 record in Group D held in Katowice, Poland, was defeated by Georgia in the first knockout round.

This year marked Coulibaly’s second consecutive summer with the French senior national team, following his debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he contributed to the team that earned a silver medal alongside his former Metropolitans 92 teammate, Victor Wembanyama. Earlier in his career, he represented France at the FIBA U18 European Championship in 2022.

In the 2023 NBA Draft, he was picked seventh overall by the Indiana Pacers but was quickly traded to the Wizards. Over the past two seasons, he has made 122 appearances in the league, with 59 of those occurring during the 2024-25 season. He posted averages of 12.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.7 blocks until he suffered a season-ending right hamstring injury in March.
