DALLAS (AP)— The Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement to extend the contract of forward P.J. Washington and will also be re-signing guard Dante Exum, moves designed to solidify their roster for the 2025-26 season.

The Mavericks announced Washington’s extension on Thursday, with a source familiar with the agreement stating its value at $89 million over four years. This source, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of the terms, confirmed the details.

Since joining the Mavericks in a trade prior to the 2024 deadline, Washington has proven to be a key contributor, helping the team reach the NBA Finals just months later.

With the Mavericks drafting No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, it will be intriguing to see how Washington fits into the team’s lineup. Both he and Flagg have experience playing at small forward, a position that seems optimal for Flagg’s skills.

Once star point guard Kyrie Irving returns from a torn ACL, both players could share the court with him. However, Irving is anticipated to miss the start of the upcoming season, leaving uncertainty surrounding his return.

In the meantime, Exum will provide depth at the point guard position until Irving is back, and he could play a critical role if he maintains his health. The 30-year-old, who was the fifth overall selection in the 2014 draft from Australia, has endured substantial injury setbacks during his two years with the Mavericks.

To accommodate Exum on the roster, the Mavericks waived Olivier-Maxence Prosper, who was a first-round pick two years ago.
