LeBron James recently reflected on the possibility of retirement but stopped short of specifying when he plans to hang up his sneakers.
“I recognize I’m past my peak,” the 40-year-old forward shared during his guest appearance on the ‘360 With Speedy’ podcast. “There’s no way I’ll be playing for another 23 years, that’s for certain, and I definitely won’t be on the court in another decade.”
“I’m certainly preparing for the conclusion of my career, although that moment hasn’t arrived just yet,” added the four-time NBA champion, who is in his 22nd season in the league.
As he approaches his 23rd season since being the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, the 2025-26 campaign will mark his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers, following a lengthy tenure of 11 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four years with the Miami Heat.
Last year, competing in a total of 75 games during the Regular Season and the Playoffs, he averaged 24.5 points, 8.0 assists, 7.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. Clearly, he’s not showing any signs of slowing down, but he acknowledges that retirement is on the horizon.
“Retirement is on the way,” he stated, “it just hasn’t arrived yet.”
During the interview, conducted during his recent trip to China, LeBron also discussed various subjects, including the debate surrounding his claim of predicting Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game in 2006 and naming Derrick Tarver from his youth league as the toughest player he has ever defended.
