Following Greece’s triumph in securing a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2025, Giannis Antetokounmpo participated in an interview with Sport24.
When inquired about the possibility of playing for a European team, the two-time NBA MVP expressed openness to the idea, provided the circumstances and timing are favorable.
“Absolutely. Last year, after the Olympic Qualifiers, I was watching some highlights with Thanasis, and I said, ‘Hey, Thanasis…’ He looked at me like I was out of my mind—like, ‘The greatest player in the world, or one of the top players, would actually play in Europe?'” Giannis recounted.
He is convinced that others might consider similar options if the right opportunity arose.
“Definitely, it could happen. If you told Jokic he could make about the same salary and be home in Serbia, he would take that chance. Personally, I often think about my physical condition. The financial situation is vastly different, and it’s not just about the money—the entire organization operates in a distinct manner. After experiencing the NBA, you understand how things function there. But every year when I don my national team jersey, I find myself echoing the same sentiments.”
Giannis also shared an intimate discussion he had with his wife.
“I asked her, ‘Would you prefer to stay in Greece or move to Milwaukee?’ She replied immediately, ‘Athens. Athens. Athens is great.’ And I responded, ‘Alright, think it over.’ I believe the game in Europe is markedly more physical. You absorb more hits, but there aren’t as many bodies to give those hits. You get what I mean?”
He acknowledged that European basketball has its own unique style.
“Indeed, it’s subtler—somewhat rougher. But you won’t find a Duren from Detroit here, nor an Adebayo, a Steven Adams, or a Zach Edey, an Anthony Davis, or a Jaren Jackson. I could go on all night. You still take some hits here, but the physicality isn’t quite the same in Europe. In a sense, it’s less intense.”
So, is such a scenario plausible?
“Certainly. Messi moved to MLS and joined Miami. If the right circumstances and timing align, it wouldn’t concern me at all.”
When prompted about his choice of cities, mentioning “Athens or Milwaukee” instead of specific clubs like Barcelona or Monaco, Giannis smiled and said:
“You noticed that! You’re quite perceptive…”
