Monte Morris Joins Pacers on One-Year Deal, Eyes Roster Spot Amid Competing Talent

Monte Morris has reached an agreement for a one-year partially guaranteed contract with the Indiana Pacers, according to reports from several U.S. media outlets on Tuesday.

In recent weeks, the 30-year-old point guard evaluated various options, including a potential move to the EuroLeague. He had been associated with European clubs Olympiacos and Partizan Mozzart Bet. Now, he will vie for a place on the Pacers’ roster for the 2025-26 season, which might lead him back into the free-agent market later.

As the team prepares for training camp following their appearance in the 2025 NBA Finals Presented by YouTube TV, coach Rick Carlisle has 13 players signed with fully guaranteed contracts. This opens up opportunities for Morris and other contenders for the starting lineup. Presently, Tyrese Haliburton is on the injury list and is anticipated to miss the entire season, indicating the need for another point guard to support Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell.

Morris, who played college basketball at Iowa State, was chosen by the Denver Nuggets with the 51st overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. After starting his career with a two-way contract that led to a five-year stint in Denver, he was subsequently traded to the Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and Minnesota Timberwolves before signing with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent last summer. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 477 games.

During the last season with the Suns, Morris averaged 5.2 points, 1.6 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 0.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game across 45 appearances.
