A year after inking a four-year, $32 million contract to take the helm as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has recently secured a contract extension.
Rob Pelinka, the team’s president of basketball operations and general manager, made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday, just days before the commencement of training camp for the NBA Preseason 2025. Details of the new agreement have yet to be disclosed.
“It’s a unique situation for a first-time head coach to receive an extension, and I truly appreciate the support from this organization,” said Redick, reflecting on his circumstances at 41 years old.
In a timely discussion, both Pelinka and Redick touched upon the contributions of Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
“Luka’s overall leadership is impressive; he not only leads by example but is also very vocal during practices about the team’s performance and cohesion. His ongoing development as a leader, both through action and communication, has made a significant impression on me,” Pelinka, aged 55, noted. “I believe this will have a positive impact as we head into camp this year.”
Redick elaborated on Doncic’s preparations, stating, “This is Luka’s new reality and routine—a daily commitment to the high standards he has set for himself. His enthusiasm, not only for what this season holds but also in embracing this elevated standard, is quite evident. I’m looking forward to seeing the best version of Luka, and it’s my responsibility as a coach to help him achieve that every day.”
In addition to Doncic’s participation in EuroBasket 2025 and signing a three-year maximum contract extension during the offseason, the 40-year-old James exercised a $52.6 million player option in June, gearing up for his 23rd season in the NBA.
“The primary focus regarding LeBron’s future is to give him the respect to dictate his own narrative alongside his family about how many more years he plans to play,” stated Pelinka. “He has certainly earned that right, and he is best positioned to discuss how long he wishes to continue. We would be thrilled if LeBron’s narrative ends with him retiring as a Laker.”
Reflecting on a couple of summer meetings with LeBron, Redick shared, “I left those conversations feeling confident in his mindset and I know he’s going to give us everything he has.”
After the preseason activities, the Lakers are set to kick off the 2025-26 Regular Season against the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena on October 21.
