One year after securing a four-year, $32 million contract as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has recently finalized a contract extension.
Rob Pelinka, the president of basketball operations and general manager, revealed the extension during a press conference held on Thursday, just days before the start of the NBA Preseason 2025 training camp. The specifics of the new deal have not been disclosed.
Redick, 41, acknowledged the significance of becoming a first-time head coach who has been granted an extension. “I realize how uncommon this is, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of an organization that supports me in this way,” he stated.
In response to the news, Pelinka and Redick discussed star players Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Pelinka, 55, spoke about Doncic’s presence, noting, “What stood out to me was his leadership approach—how he not only set an example but was also vocal during practices regarding his expectations for the team’s cohesion and performance. Witnessing his ongoing development as both a leader in action and with his voice was impressive. I believe this will resonate throughout training camp this year.”
Redick commented on Doncic’s commitment, stating, “This is now his life, his routine. He is fully dedicated to the elevated standard he has established for himself. His enthusiasm about the upcoming season and his willingness to embrace this new benchmark were palpable. I anticipate seeing the best version of Luka, and it’s my responsibility as his coach to help him realize that each day.”
While Doncic balances EuroBasket 2025 with a three-year maximum contract extension obtained during the offseason, 40-year-old James opted into a $52.6 million player option in June, marking the beginning of his 23rd NBA season.
“In terms of LeBron’s future, our priority is to afford him the utmost respect regarding his choices for his career alongside his family, particularly how long he wishes to continue playing,” Pelinka remarked. “He has well earned that right, and only he can determine how many more years he plans to play. We sincerely hope that he will conclude his career as a Laker.”
Reflecting on his discussions with James over the summer, Redick added, “I left those conversations feeling confident about his mental state and knew we could expect his very best.”
As for the upcoming preseason, the Lakers will kick off the 2025-26 regular season against the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena on October 21.
