Just a year after inking a four-year, $32 million contract to take the helm as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has recently secured a contract extension.
During a press conference on Thursday, Rob Pelinka, the president of basketball operations and general manager, officially announced the agreement just days prior to the start of the NBA Preseason 2025 training camp. Details about the new contract have not been disclosed.
“I am fully aware of the unusual nature of a first-time head coach receiving an extension. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of an organization that supports me in this manner,” expressed the 41-year-old Redick.
In addition to the contract update, Pelinka and Redick addressed Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
“What stood out to me was Luka’s overall leadership style—he led by example, but was also very vocal during practice about his expectations for the team, their play, and their unity. Observing his ongoing development and growth as a vocal leader alongside being a role model truly impressed me,” remarked Pelinka, who is 55. “I believe this will transition into camp this year.”
Redick also spoke about adjustments made during workouts by Doncic, saying, “This is now Luka’s life. This has become his routine and a daily commitment to the new standards he has established for himself. His enthusiasm for what he hopes this season will bring, as well as his eagerness to uphold this new standard, was evident. I anticipate seeing the best version of Luka, and it’s my responsibility as his coach to help him achieve that every day.”
Alongside the Slovenian star’s plans for EuroBasket 2025 and a three-year maximum contract extension during the offseason, 40-year-old James exercised a $52.6 million player option back in June as he prepares for his 23rd NBA season.
“Our primary focus regarding LeBron’s future is to ensure he has the utmost respect to determine his own path with his family, particularly concerning how many years he intends to continue playing,” Pelinka stated. “He has earned that privilege and is the best person to discuss how long he wishes to play. We would be thrilled if LeBron’s narrative concluded with him retiring as a Laker.”
“I left those summer meetings feeling confident that he is in a fantastic place mentally and that he will give us his very best,” Redick added about his discussions with LeBron.
As the preseason wraps, the Lakers are set to kick off the 2025-26 Regular Season against the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena on October 21.
