JJ Redick Signs Extension, Foresees Luka Doncics Evolution as Team Leader

A year after inking a four-year, $32 million contract to take the helm of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick has just secured a contract extension.

Rob Pelinka, the president of basketball operations and general manager, made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday, just days ahead of the 2025 NBA Preseason training camp. The details of the new agreement were not disclosed.

“I’m acutely aware of how unusual it is for a first-time head coach to receive an extension. I truly appreciate being part of an organization that backs me like this,” commented the 41-year-old Redick.

In addition to the extension news, Pelinka and Redick also discussed the performances of Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

“What stood out to me was Luka’s overall leadership. He not only set an example but was also very vocal during practices about his expectations for the team, their performance, and their unity. His ongoing development as both a leader by deed and by speech impressed me significantly,” Pelinka, 55, noted. “I believe this will resonate throughout training camp this year.”

“This has become his life now. This is his daily routine and his unwavering commitment to the new standards he has established for himself. His enthusiasm for the upcoming season, along with his embrace of these new expectations, was incredibly evident,” Redick stated, referring to adjustments made by the Slovenian star. “I anticipate seeing the best version of Luka, and it’s my responsibility as a coach to help him achieve that every day.”

In addition to combining his EuroBasket 2025 participation with a three-year maximum contract extension during the offseason, the 40-year-old James exercised a $52.6 million player option in June, gearing up for his 23rd NBA season.

“Our primary focus regarding LeBron’s future is to fully respect his ability to dictate his story with his family concerning how many years he wishes to continue playing,” Pelinka said. “He has earned that right, and he is the best person to determine how long he wants to stay on the court. We would love for his narrative to conclude with him retiring as a Laker.”

“I’m confident he’s in an excellent mental space and ready to bring his best performance,” added Redick, reflecting on a couple of summer discussions with LeBron.

After the preseason, the Lakers will kick off the 2025-26 Regular Season against the Golden State Warriors at crypto.com Arena on October 21.
