Al Horford Signs Multi-Year Deal with Golden State Warriors, Set to Lead in the Paint

Al Horford has officially inked a multi-year deal with the Golden State Warriors, as reported by ESPN’s lead NBA insider Shams Charania on Sunday.

Regarded as the premier center option for the Warriors throughout the offseason, the five-time All-Star weighed his choices, including the possibility of retirement, before deciding to sign the contract.

Having played for the Boston Celtics from 2016 to 2019 and again from 2021 up to the conclusion of the previous season, Horford secured an NBA championship in 2024. His professional journey also includes stints with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Hawks, totaling 1,135 appearances across the Regular Season and Playoffs. He will now take on the role of starting center under Steve Kerr.

Drafted third overall in 2007 after leaving the University of Florida, he followed Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. After spending the first nine years of his NBA career with the Hawks, Horford joined the Celtics as a free agent in 2016. He later signed with the Sixers in 2019 but was traded to the Thunder during the 2020-21 season. As the 2021-22 season approached, he made a return to the Celtics through a trade.

“In the time I’ve spent here, you have embraced my family and me with warmth. This phase of my career will always hold a special significance for me. Celebrating banner 18 with this city is a memory I will forever treasure. I am deeply thankful to the fans and the organization,” Horford expressed his gratitude to the Celtics in a post on X, adding, “Thank you, Boston.”

In addition to his 18-year NBA career, he represented the Dominican Republic in FIBA tournaments from 2008 to 2012, participating in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Venezuela in 2012. He also earned a bronze medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in 2011 and helped his team finish fifth at the FIBA Americas Championship in 2009, along with securing gold in Centrobasket 2012 and bronze in Centrobasket 2008.
