Shaquille O’Neal Praises Victor Wembanyama: The Evolution of the Modern Big Man

The San Antonio Spurs, with Victor Wembanyama at the forefront, are capturing attention with their perfect 5-0 record, and Shaquille O’Neal is already sold on their potential.

During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Shaq praised Wembanyama as a transformative talent in the league, comparable to a distinct type of big man from the past.

He remarked, “Victor Wembanyama is changing the game for big men. While the Joker has already shifted expectations for the position, Wemby is elevating it even further—dribbling between his legs, stepping back, and reminiscent of Kevin Durant. He’s putting on a fantastic performance right now, and I’m thrilled for him and the San Antonio franchise.”

Shaq also offered some advice to Wemby regarding the long season ahead: “My suggestion would be to pace himself. Phil Jackson had a unique approach; during the three consecutive championship seasons, there were moments when he would say, ‘Take a couple of games off. I need you to recuperate. No parties, no music videos, no commercials—just rest. But when you return, I expect you to deliver a 40-point game.’ Phil excelled at managing my playing time and injury recovery, and he also effectively kept us from struggling against Utah. I’m not sure how he did it, but those matchups were always tough before he came along.”
