Lucas Campbell, Bryan Lentz promoted to Tennessee basketball assistant coaches

Rick Barnes announced a trio of Tennessee basketball staff promotions Wednesday.

Lucas Campbell and Bryan Lentz were promoted to assistant coaches and Riley Collins was promoted to assistant director of player development.

Tennessee now has five assistant coaches, which became the allowable total for men’s and women’s basketball as of July 2023. UT has had the trio of Rod Clark, Justin Gainey and Gregg Polinsky for the past three seasons.

Campbell, who was a UT walk-on guard under Barnes from 2015-19, returned to Tennessee as the director of recruiting in June 2022.

“Over nearly a decade, I have seen Lucas grow from an eager walk-on freshman my first season here at Tennessee into now a rising star in the coaching profession,” Barnes said in a school release.

He was the director of basketball operations at ETSU for a season prior. The CAK graduate played in 16 games and scored 15 points, including shooting 3-for-7 on 3-pointers. He joined Barnes’ staff as a graduate assistant following his playing career. He received his master’s degree in sport management from UT in May 2021.

Lentz has been on Barnes’ staff since 2018 and is entering his seventh season at UT. He previously was the director of player development. He also worked for Barnes at Texas from 2010-14. He also is a Hickory, North Carolina, native and a Lenoir-Rhyne graduate like Barnes. Lentz started his coaching career at Lenoir-Rhyne, working alongside his father and heralded Bears coach John Lentz. He also coached at Appalachian State for four seasons.

“Bryan has a strong basketball mind and possesses nearly a quarter-century of coaching experience,” Barnes said.
