Shaqir O’Neal, Shaq’s son, is joining FAMU basketball. When will he play his first game?

Shaqir O’Neal’s decision to join Florida A&M’s men’s basketball team continues to generate excitement throughout Rattler Nation.

Shaqir, the youngest son of Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, has transferred from fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference program and HBCU Texas Southern.

FAMU announced the news Monday night.

Shaqir O’Neal, 21, is a rising redshirt junior and joins new FAMU head coach Patrick Crarey II’s inaugural recruiting class.

Shaqir O’Neal played college basketball for the Texas Southern Tigers from 2021 to 2024. He transferred to join the Florida A&M Rattlers on July 9 ahead of his redshirt sophomore season.

At Texas Southern, the 6-foot-8 forward averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in 8.5 minutes. He made 6 of 21 attempts from 3-point range last season.

O’Neal has two years of eligibility remaining and should have the opportunity to find an increased role with the Rattlers, who are coming off a 6-23 season.

O’Neal is expected to arrive on campus for the start of FAMU’s fall classes on Aug. 26.

FAMU, known for its rigorous non-conference schedule, is set to open its 2024-2025 basketball season at Texas Christian University on Nov. 4.

The Rattlers will also reportedly play non-conference road games at Southern Methodist (Nov. 7), Maryland (Nov. 11), Florida (Nov. 19), Clemson (Nov. 29), Utah (Dec. 17), and Brigham Young (Dec. 20), and a home game versus Presbyterian (Dec. 3) according to Bracketeer’s Rocco Miller.
