Who is Gary Trent Jr? Meet new Bucks guard, stats, contract, roster

Bucks add veterans, summer league and Giannis in the Olympics

How do the Bucks feel about Giannis in the Olympics? Plus: Delon Wright and Taurean Prince arrive, and what will Summer League mean for Milwaukee?

The Milwaukee Bucks made a bit of a free-agency splash on Tuesday in reaching an agreement with former Toronto Raptors shooting guard Gary Trent Jr., a player who has a little bit of history in Milwaukee.

In January of 2023, Trent and Bucks big man Brook Lopez were involved in an altercation that resulted in Lopez drawing a technical foul and, eventually, his first career ejection after picking up a second.

In a 130-122 win over the Raptors at Fiserv Forum, Lopez and Trent Jr. got tied up, at which point Lopez removed Trent’s headband in an altercation that spilled onto the Bucks bench. Lopez then pushed OG Anunoby, which merited a second technical and triggered the ejection.

“I can’t expect the refs to get it right if they’re not going to get it right during the game,” Lopez said afterward. “Why are they going to get it right when they replay it, or any other call. It’s what it is, you know? I make mistakes, you make mistakes; they make mistakes too. They made mistakes tonight and it’s what it is. They’re human. They’re fallible. Even with the help of replay, they still have a tough time, so it’s cool. It’s what it is.”

Here’s what else to know about the Bucks newcomer, Gary Trent Jr.

Who is Gary Trent Jr.?

Gary Trent Jr is entering his eighth year in the NBA in 2024-25. He played the first 2½ years of his career with the Portland Trailblazers before spending the last 3½ years with the Toronto Raptors.

For his career, he averages 14.3 points per game, shoots 42.2% from the field, 38.6% from three-point range, 2.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals.

Last year for the Raptors, he played in 71 games and averaged 13.7 points and shot 42.6% from the field and 39.3% on three pointers.

He averaged a career-high 18.3 points during a 2021-22 season.

The five-star recruit in the 2017 high school class and as a teenager won gold medals with Team USA in the FIBA Americas championships and the FIBA U17 world championship.

He played in the McDonald’s All-American Game before spending two years at Duke.

He was the 37th pick in the 2018 NBA draft, selected by Sacramento but immediately dealt to Portland.

Gary Trent has a connection to Damian Lillard

Before he played for the Raptors the past three seasons, Gary Trent Jr. began his career as a Portland Trail Blazer and teammate of current Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard. Considering Trent probably could have signed anywhere else on veteran minimum contract, it stands to reason Trent viewed the Bucks situation as an attractive one, either because of Lillard or the team’s proximity to a championship.

What are Gary Trent Jr.’s other stats?

Gary Trent Jr. spent the past three-plus seasons playing for the Toronto Raptors, averaging 16.4 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals in nearly 32 minutes per game. He’s been a starter in 201 of his 341 career NBA games, which also includes time with Portland early in his career. He’s a career 38% 3-point shooter.

He’s seen action in 11 postseason games during two playoff runs with Portland.

How old is Gary Trent?

Trent is 25 years old.

What is Gary Trent’s contract situation?

The Bucks could only offer a veteran minimum given their tax situation. That shakes out to $2,613,120 for his one-year deal.

Where did Gary Trent play college basketball?

Trent spent two years at Duke University, recruited out of a high school in California (he also played high-school basketball in Minnesota and was born in Columbus, Ohio). He turned pro at the same time as Duke senior Grayson Allen, a future member of the Bucks.

Gary Trent Jr.’s dad played pro basketball, as well

Gary Trent Sr. played nine years of NBA basketball and overseas thereafter, beginning his career with stops in Portland and Toronto, just like his son. He played postseason games for both the Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves.

How does Gary Trent signing impact the Bucks roster?

Trent will almost certainly start for the Bucks at shooting guard.

What is the Bucks roster after the Gary Trent signing?

The Bucks have now filled all their roster spots for the 2024-25 season. Those roster spots include Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, AJ Green, MarJon Beauchamp, Andre Jackson Jr., Delon Wright, Taurean Prince, Gary Trent Jr., Chris Livingston, rookies AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith, plus two-way players Stanley Umude, Jaylin Galloway and Ryan Rollins.
