The Dallas Mavericks announced on Tuesday that guard Kyrie Irving suffered a fractured left hand while training and required surgery.

The Mavericks didn’t provide further details of Irving’s injury or his timeline to return. It’s not clear how he sustained the injury or what specific bone or bones in his hand were broken.

“He sustained the injury earlier this month while training,” a team statement reads. “Further medical updates on Irving’s status will be provided as appropriate.”

The Mavericks’ season ended on June 17 with a Game 5 loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. The schedule for the upcoming NBA season hasn’t been released yet. Training camp generally starts in early October and the regular season a few weeks later in late October. The Mavericks didn’t provide clarity on whether Irving is expected back in time to start the regular season.

An eight-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection, Irving helped lead the Mavericks alongside MVP finalist Luka Dončić to their first Finals appearance since they won the NBA title in 2011. In his first full season in Dallas, Irving averaged 25.6 points, 5.2 assists, five rebounds and 1.3 steals in 58 regular-season games while shooting 49.7% from the field and 41.1% from 3-point distance.
