Jul. 17—A few players were scratched from Monday’s East-West All-Star Basketball game in Greensboro too late for anyone to fill in, and the East All-Stars went into the contest with just eight players.
In the fast-paced, uptempo game that followed, the East couldn’t keep up in what became a 108-92 victory for the West, but don’t blame Southern Lee’s Isaiah Upchurch for that.
Upchurch, who led the Cavaliers to a 22-win season this past winter before graduating in May, played his final high school game in the 76th annual showcase at Novant Health Fieldhouse in Greensboro. Upchurch was in the starting five and played 27 minutes, the second most on the team. The 6’4″ guard was one of five members of the team to score in double figures, scoring 15 points on 4-9 shooting from the floor and 5-7 at the free-throw line. He had three rebounds and two assists.
The West jumped out in front early and led the game 49-39 at halftime. A big problem for the East in the first half was an inability to shoot from long range, as the East made just three of 16 shots from behind the 3-point arc before the break. In the second half, the pace picked up considerably, and 112 points were scored in the second half.
The East upped its overall shooting percentage to 51.4 in the second half and made five of 12 from long range, but was unable to keep pace. The West’s Jamias Ferere scored a game-high 30 points to win game MVP honors.
Two players from Northern Nash led the East in scoring. Randall King had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Izeal Mallory tallied 16 points. Upchurch was next with his 15.
