Westwood Basketball Coach Kadrian Bryant leads exhibit at THSCA convention

Jul. 22—SAN ANTONIO- Westwood Head Basketball Coach Kadrian Bryant is quickly becoming one of the most respected basketball coaches in the state, as evidenced by his selection to give a presentation this year at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention in San Antonio.

The presentation, which was over how to effectively transition during a basketball game, was attended by dozens of Texas high school basketball coaches, all looking to bring a small piece of Bryant’s extensive basketball knowledge back to their own respective programs.

The transition element of a basketball game is one of the most important factors of a good team. The transition, or the process of switching from defense to offense or vice versa, is one of the most chaotic pieces of a basketball game, and a teams ability to keep, or steal, possession during the transition can be make or break, regardless of it being a single game, or the season as a whole.

Bryant had a trusty pair of helpers for his demonstration, as his sons Kavian and Kaden took to the court as their fathers real-life chess pieces, giving coaches in attendance a visual aid to the concepts Bryant laid before them.

Bryants’s extensive knowledge comes from years entrenched in the game of basketball, first a star player for the Carthage Bulldogs before moving on to Mississippi Valley State, playing in the 2007 NIT basketball tournament with the Delta Devils. He has also had coaching stops at Tenaha, Crockett and North Forney High School’s.

While football season has still not begun, the anticipation for the 2024-25 Westwood basketball season is already at a fever pitch, as the Panthers had their best season in program history a season ago, qualifying for the 3A Region 3 Semifinal, and posting a 27-9 overall season record.
