Where Clemson basketball, Brad Brownell rank in USA TODAY preseason coaches poll

CLEMSON — Clemson basketball is unranked in the preseason USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll released on Wednesday.

The Tigers received eight points to miss the Top 25 and be ranked 11th in the receiving votes category. They are the third-highest ACC team, finishing behind No. 5 Duke and No. 10 North Carolina. One other ACC school earned votes: Wake Forest.

Clemson’s preseason ranking is a huge drop after it finished No. 15 in the coaches poll to conclude last season. It reached the Elite Eight for the first time in 44 years last season but has a considerably different roster after key players, like PJ Hall, departed via the portal, expiring eligibility or the NBA.

The Tigers were unranked in the preseason AP top 25 poll too, but they were picked to finish fourth in the 18-team ACC in the conference’s preseason media poll.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell, who earned a contract extension in July, added four transfers and three freshmen this season. They look to compliment guard Chase Hunter and forwards Ian Schieffelin and Chauncey Wiggins as Clemson bids to make the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years for the first time since 2010 and 2011.

Clemson will open its season with three ranked opponents on its schedule: No. 23 Kentucky on Dec. 3, No. 5 Duke on Feb. 8 and No. 10 North Carolina on Feb. 10. The Tigers begin their season on Nov. 4 vs. Charleston Southern at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Kansas is the No. 1 team in the poll, earning 743 points and 15 first-place votes. Alabama, which defeated Clemson in the Elite Eight last season, is No. 2 with 718 points and six first-place votes. The defending national champion, UConn, is No. 3 and received six first-place vote; No. 4 Houston earned four first-place votes.

The USA TODAY Sports Board of Coaches is made up of 31 head coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
