DURHAM, N.C. — No one can speak more about the competitive nature of Bobby Hurley than his former coach Mike Krzyzewski.
The legendary Duke coach had Hurley for four years, during which time the Blue Devils went to three Final Fours and won back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992. Whether it was a game or just a practice, Hurley wanted to be the best.
The famed coach was at Cameron Indoor Stadium here Saturday afternoon as Hurley’s Arizona State squad took to the floor for a practice session in preparation for an exhibition game between the two programs on Sunday night.
Krzyzewski embraced Hurley before making his way over to a scrum of reporters.
He posed for a few photos, one with highly touted ASU freshman Jayden Quaintance.
“The main thing is he prepared to win,” the coach said of Hurley. “After every practice, at that time the Stairmaster was the big thing. He would go on the Stairmaster for a half-hour or 45 minutes and try to break the record he had. And then he’d even leave notes for his teammates. ‘Try to beat that.’ He never got tired and I never wanted to sub for him — and I didn’t very much.”
Much of the proceeds for Sunday’s exhibition game will go toward the Duke Children’s Hospital.
Hurley, 53, is entering his 10th season directing the Sun Devils. He says he has been back to Cameron Indoor Stadium just twice. His No. 11 is one of the retired numbers hanging from the rafters next to that of Grant Hill.
The fact that Hurley is coaching makes it difficult for him to get back here. Hurley was able to make it to Krzyzewski’s last game, a loss to rival North Carolina in a Final Four game at the Superdome in April 2022.
The entire Hurley family made this trip. Of course, his only son, Bobby, plays for the Sun Devils and dons the same number his father wore. The ASU coach said he has great memories of his days in Durham so he never felt the need to revisit it.
Hurley was inducted into the Duke Hall of Fame in 2011. His career record of 1,076 assists is an NCAA…
