Cuban Critiques Doncic Trade: Mavs Should Have Demanded More

In recent weeks, there has been an outcry regarding the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic, with former principal owner Mark Cuban once again voicing his stance on the matter. He emphasized that the Mavericks should have secured a more favorable deal for the Slovenian star.

“From a basketball standpoint, I only learn about these things after the fact,” the 66-year-old Cuban stated in a Thursday interview with Dallas news outlet WFAA, reiterating that he is no longer involved in the team’s decision-making process. “I’m not privy to anything beforehand.”

On February 2, Doncic was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers, with the trade yielding Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft. Along with Doncic, German player Maxi Kleber and Markief Morris also moved from Dallas to Los Angeles.

Cuban remarked, “If the Mavericks were going to trade Luka, that’s one thing. They just needed to get a better return. I still believe that if we had received four unprotected first-round picks along with Anthony Davis and Max Christie, we would be having a different discussion.”

When asked if he would have accepted such a deal, he replied, “I’m not going to get into that. It’s irrelevant.”

Since the significant trade, Doncic has played a key role in the Lakers’ success, helping elevate the team to second place in the Western Conference standings, averaging 23.8 points over ten games in the 2024-25 Regular Season.
